Freedom of speech and expression?
May 28, 2007Does technology leads to freedom of speech and expression? I think the question would rather highlight the Asian countries which have the difficulties in considering the term freedom of speech or expression. Though, most of the countries are experiencing rapid media development, press freedom is totaly not in the political agenda to be developed. This actually give an impact to the citizens to have their freedom of expression in politics. Looking at Malaysia, the emergence of internet has attract many independent organizations and also opposition parties to have their own website to express their thoughts. However, those sites will be regularly checked by the Malaysian government. Definately, no criticism on government! Any communication in news-based website will be monitered. It is not impossible, other websites such as forums to be restricted. There are a few cases in Malaysian forum that have been such controversial issues where the online community express their thoughts on popular and high level people which considered not appropriate. The cases end up, those people were sued for libel.
Democracy in Malaysia is an “Eastern-democracy” because i think we have own culture where we were born to have the respect. I do feel awkward if i found any bad, i mean really really bad criticism on my country. Though, there are certain small issues that i dont agree with the government but i dont feel like to express in online diaries coz it would just make it more worst and i think its better to keep it secret between we, the citizen and the government.

friendship.
May 28, 2007Friendship,a word which defines such a wonderful world of humanity. We dont know how it starts or builds the feelings but we do know there is a connection which hook us together. Laughters and sadness that have been shared build the strength in a relationship. Think a life without friendship. Friendship doesnt mean it has to be among friends but also between families or even partner of your life. Now, in this new era of technology. Do u think its have the impact in a friendship?
Say, the technology of mobile. For me and my sister, we tend to have this feeling of “need my mobile” every second in our life. The reason is because we dont want to miss any of the calls because it might be an important or urgent ones. At times, waiting for a call just seems to hurt us so bad. Like, waiting a call from special boyfriend. At times, we just went like, Why didnt he called me? Its already 2 days he didnt make any calls or even sms. No, i cant call him. He has to make the first move because he’s a guy. Do you guys got it?
Also, the internet. Through sites such as WordPress.com, Myspace.com, Friendster.com and other blogging sites would also give the impact on friendship. The thoughts and feelings can be expressed through these sites, definately. checking blogs within the online community would somehow give the connection, relation and strengthen the friendships. Sometimes, something fun like bets’sblog telling us how nice her holiday was would somehow give the chances for others to know her better. okay. lets not stop blogging. lets go along with technology. it will be fun. trust me! huhu.

online community.
May 10, 2007i read deb’s entry on community project that she’s gonna proceed with. Personally, I think it is an interesting topic to be discussed on. How groups of people tend to be described as a community. Real-life community and virtual community, both terms have own definition. If we relates community with media, it would suggests the real-life community with “traditional media” while virtual community is more to “new media”. When i think about myself and my friends, not only i use to hang-out with them but also get connected to each other using email, blogs, yahoo messenger/msn messenger and also myspace/friendster.com. The communication through multiple websites and softwares create the strength in relationships between me and my friends. I thinks that’s the new digital era. I might say that i am more into virtual community now because most of my friends are back home and even here, we are so busy with own work and havent’d got much time to hang-around together. And so, the best way is to get online and connected to each other. An easy way plus a good construction in building social networks. For example, nimh’s particular entry. From spreading the words through blogging, we can actually make friends in the real world.
Online community is “a virtual community is a group of people that primarily or initially communicate or interact via the Internet, rather than face to face. Online communities have also become a supplemental form of communication between people who know each other in real life” (Wikipedia 2007). This definition gives a clear view of what it is and how it differs from the real-life community. Let’s not hide ourselves from the new world and keep updating! Online community does not exist in just a particular source but in variety areas. For example, online gaming is also creating a social network between players.

the greatest world of blogging.
April 26, 2007I guess this semester’s course is really fun. Transient Spaces get me discover more about new technology. Anyways, Transient Spaces is the name of the course which the learning scopes are in relation to the area of “multimedia”. Blogging is one of the learning activities that we’ve done. I guess i got some personal thoughts about this new media stuff, “blogging”.
Blogging could be so much fun when we, as the writer could say or express what we feel, thought of or even contributes opinion. Blogging has been a “hot” topic in the area of media. It creates so much debates and discussions among the scholars as well as media professionals. It’s because of the new invention of media such as blogging, has leads to the freedom of society as whole.
Blogging could take the society to another world of “community”. The online community exists invisibly, it doesn’t apply the “face to face” concept in both sending and receiving messages. As for example, entries from a writer that being published in certain blogs such as wordpress.com can attract other bloggers in giving their comments or opinions in the comment section. Thus, the emergence of blogging leads to communication and create a virtual community.
Blogging has the ability to give the easiest way to get updated and connected with families and friends. From just a simple entry, it could leads to a discussion or even argument from people around (the online community). As one of the blogger, Erinmook quoted from Deborah Branscum’s statement who believes that:-
“There are four “cool” things about webblogs. They are creative freedom, instantaneity, interactivity and lack of marketing constraint”.
This quotation may perhaps conclude that blogging, i could say as one of the greatest invention of new media.
